Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) is the first enzyme in phenylpropanoid pathway and plays a critical role plant growth, development stress defence. However, there have been few reports of PAL gene family lucerne (also known as alfalfa, Medicago sativa L.), one most important forage legume species worldwide. In this study, we report that encoded by seven genes: MsPAL1–MsPAL7. Furthermore, comprehensive genome-wide bioinformatics analysis MsPAL presented, including chromosomal locations, phylogenetic relationships, structures conserved motifs. The cis-elements potential biological functions these genes were investigated, revealing roles members response to various stresses. RT-qPCR results showed expression MsPAL6 was significantly upregulated under both salinity- waterlogging-stress conditions. Other such MsPAL1 MsPAL2 downregulated saline conditions after waterlogging stress. Our findings provide useful information for further practical analyses genetic improvement abiotic tolerance lucerne.
